The BFCA Interviews and Events Collection gathers recordings and promotional materials related to events sponsored by the Black Film Center & Archive at Indiana University. The collection chronicles the BFCA’s ongoing in-house research and outreach initiatives, as well as preserves correspondences and interviews with the many filmmakers and guest speakers hosted or recorded by the BFCA in its 40-year history. Interviewees include Maya Angelou, S. Torriano Berry, Les Blank, Jim Brown, Charles Burnett, Bernie Casey, Kathleen Collins, Pedro Costa, Julie Dash, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Claire Denis, Ava DuVernay, William Greaves, Bill Gunn, Ernie Hudson, Regina Kimbell, Spike Lee, Marlon Riggs, Martin Ritt, Kathe Sandler, and Melvin Van Peebles, among others. One of the largest portions of the collection consists of materials from In Touch with the Spirit, a July 1992 conference sponsored by the BFCA in Indianapolis that attracted over 1,000 participants to discuss the impact of Black religious and music expression in American cinema.
